The Stanly Community College Library has been awarded two grants to help fund computers and cleaning supplies for SCC’s Learning Resources Center.

The Albemarle Rotary Club has provided funds to purchase Chromebooks. These Chromebooks can be checked out of the LRC for three weeks at a time and will target students who are without technology in their homes to better equip them for academic and economic success. The cleaning supplies will help support the library during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Because the computers within the College library are the most utilized library service, it is crucial that students have access to reliable technology in their homes so they can complete school assignments, apply for jobs, and complete needed paperwork such as taxes and FAFSA,” said Joel Ferdon, director of Library Services at Stanly Community College. “Additionally, the majority of SCC classes are either online or have a hybrid component, so it is even more crucial that students have access to reliable technology. We are very thankful for the generosity of the Albemarle Rotary Club to help students stay connected.”

The State Library of North Carolina also awarded a Library Services and Technology Act grant to the LRC.

The grant will fund the purchase of cleaning supplies such as disinfectant spray, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer and latex-free gloves to be used to clean and sanitize books, computers, surfaces that are regularly touched and for disinfecting hands.

This grant is made possible by funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (IMLS grant number LS-00-19-0034-19).

“The SCC Library is grateful to the State Library of North Carolina for offering the COVID-19 Response mini-grant, which will allow us to keep our faculty, staff, and students safe and healthy in the library for the foreseeable future,” added Ferdon.
