The State Board of Elections and N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles have launched a service to allow NCDMV customers to apply to register to vote or update existing voter registration information online.

The free service comes at a time when many county boards of elections have limited access or are closed to the public, and while residents are being asked to stay home because of the spread of COVID-19.

“This is something I believe the State Board of Elections has been working on for some time in partnership with the DMV,” said Kim Blackwelder, director of Stanly County Board of Elections.

“This is a great way to register or update your information from home,” she said.

Blackwelder said as long as people have a driver’s license or a DMV-issued ID, they can register to vote or update any information, such as party affiliation, through the NCDMV voter registration webpage.

Blackwelder said there are voter registration forms and absentee request forms on the outside of the Stanly County Commons building and a drop box for people to drop off their completed forms.

The Board of Elections is also trying to recruit people to serve as precinct officials for the general election in November. The application can be found on the Board of Elections website.
