Stanly Community College (SCC) has announced that Alan Campbell has earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership with a focus on andragogy/adult education from the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.

Campbell has been employed with the college since 2016 as the coordinator of the academic support center and teaches history classes as an adjunct instructor.

“Congratulations to Alan Campbell on reaching his educational goals. His diligence and hard work is something that I sincerely respect,” SCC President Dr. John Enamait said.

Campbell’s dissertation was titled “Andragogic Methods of Tutoring in North Carolina Community College Multi-Subject Learning Centers,” which focused on the theories of adult education used in tutoring at community colleges.

“I felt community colleges were a great place to conduct this research because of the large number of non-traditional students in the community college population,” Campbell said.

During his high school years, Campbell focused on the automotive field, but later changed his attention to teaching.

“I wanted to be an automotive technician when I was in high school,” he said. “I earned my Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology from Central Piedmont Community College. But what I really wanted to do was teach and work in the community college system, so I returned to school and obtained my Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, then moved on to earn my Master of Arts in World History at the New York University of New York, N.Y.,” he added.

Campbell’s inspiration to earn his doctorate degree stems from a strong conviction in the community college mission.

“I believe deeply in the community college system and its role and mission to make quality education both affordable and available. Community colleges are where I intend to spend my career,” Campbell said.

He is continuing his educational studies at the University of the Cumberlands to obtain a second Master of Arts degree in Religious Studies.
