SCC hosts pinning parade for nurses

Students from the Annie Ruth Kelley Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program at Stanly Community College (SCC) had their annual pinning ceremony at the Crutchfield Education Center on June 18.
In an effort to maintain social distancing guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SCC held a pinning parade for the graduates at the Crutchfield Education Center parking lot to celebrate their special day.
Family and friends were encouraged to decorate their vehicles and drive by the line of graduates in a parade-like fashion to celebrate the graduates hard work and achievements.
SCC faculty, staff, family and friends cheered and watched as 14 of the 20 graduates from the general two-year track received their nurse’s pin from Director of Nursing Chassity Washburn.
The LPN-ADN track plans to hold a celebration at a later date.
“We are very proud of the nursing graduates and wish them all the best as they begin their careers. We know that each one of them will have a positive impact on the communities they serve,” Washburn said. “I also want to thank all nursing faculty who helped the class of 2020 reach their goals. It was important to celebrate our graduates during this pandemic.”
The pinning ceremony symbolizes completion of the highly respected and rigorous Nursing Program at SCC.
Graduates this year were granted emergency Registered Nurse (RN) status upon graduation. The emergency status changes to permanent RN status after passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).
SCC’s ADN program continues to hold high pass rates.
SCC’s nursing program is named in honor of Annie Ruth Kelley, the first chairperson of the College Board of Trustees and the first woman to chair a community college board in North Carolina. Kelley served for 28 years as a college trustee.
