Given the guidelines on large gatherings of people set forth by the Centers for Disease Control, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the Governor’s Office and local public health officials, the steering committee of the Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame has made the decision to cancel this year’s induction ceremony, which had been scheduled for July 27.

“We are disappointed to do this,” said Toby Thorpe, chairman of the steering committee, “but given the circumstances, it was really the only prudent decision we could make. The health and safety of those attending is much too important to risk.

“We will induct the class of 2020 and the class of 2021 at next year’s event,” he added, noting that the committee is “shooting for May 24, 2021” for the event.

Sponsorships and tickets for the 2020 event will be honored for the 2021 ceremony, as well.
