The Center for Prevention Services, in partnership with Crossroads Connection Faith Community and Project Lazarus, will host a Zoom virtual educational program 7 p.m. Tuesday about vaping and other tobacco products.

The speaker will be Persia Mohseni, student assistant program specialist for the North Carolina Region of the Caron Treatment Centers, an addiction treatment center in Pennsylvania.

Her presentation will review current trends in teen substance use, highlight the risk and protective factors for adolescent substance use, discuss the science of addiction and best practices for preventing substance use.

“She will focus on vaping, but she will also touch base on chewing tobacco, spitting tobacco and those kinds of things,” said CPS grant manager Neetu Verma, who organized the program.

Past CPS virtual programs this summer have featured speakers such as Delton Russell of Will’s Place and EMS community paramedic Mike Campbell.

The series is part of a five-year $1.25 million Partnership for Success Grant that CPS was awarded and that will serve the needs of those in Stanly. The grant will run through Sept. 20, 2024.

There will be a virtual program Aug. 18 about trauma and resistance, featuring Courtney Swain, community health educator at the Butterfly House Children’s Advocacy Center, and another on Sept. 15 about opioids featuring Rebecca Coleman, member engagement specialist with Cardinal Innovations Healthcare. They are also at 7 p.m.
