LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Another debate is needed

I am writing to express my concern about the thousands of votes that will be cast across the nation before both candidates face each other on the national debate stage.

Since becoming the Democratic nominee for president, I have not heard from or seen Joe Biden outside of television ads or scripted speeches. While President Trump continues to speak to the American people on a day-to-day basis, Biden has refused to take questions from the media, and when he does, it is obvious his campaign told him who to call on and his answers seem pre-approved. He has repeatedly denied tough interviews.

How are we supposed to know where Joe Biden stands if he continues to deny Americans a real, honest discussion?

It is frustrating that the first presidential debate — the only setting that will actually allow us to see Joe Biden unscripted and away from his basement — won’t be taking place until Sept. 29 — 25 days after North Carolinians will have already started voting.

Voters in our state deserve a chance to know exactly who they are casting their ballot for. The only way to adequately do so is to add an additional, earlier debate in September to ensure Americans are able to make a well-informed decision when they cast their vote.

With so much at stake, the Commission on Presidential Debates must equip voters with the facts necessary as we prepare to elect our next president.
