Two men are injured and in a hospital after their boat went airborne on Lake Tillery Friday night.

N.C. Wildlife was alerted shortly before midnight after other boaters called 911 stating a boat headed north on Tillery had struck a tree in the water before hitting the bank and going airborne. It landed upside down on the Montgomery County side of the lake near Stumpy Point, north of Edgewater, according to N.C. Wildlife Officer Joshua Freeborn.

Freeborn said it is unknown how fast the boat was going.

“We know they were going fast enough to send the boat airborne,” Freeborn said.

The 18- to 19-foot bass boat was operated by Calvin McCaskill of Thomasville. Travis Comer of Trinity, a passenger, was ejected from the boat, Freeborn said.

Both were in a hospital with serious injuries Saturday, according to Freeborn, but the extent of the injuries were unknown to him.

Officers spent nearly five hours Saturday morning documenting debris in the air, with fiberglass embedded in trees, Freeborn said.

No one has been charged in what Freeborn referred to as a complex investigation.

“We’re still trying to wrap our heads around what happened,” Freeborn said. “We’re not sure why they were traveling in the direction they were.”
