The Stanly Community College (SCC) Library was recently awarded a State Library of North Carolina (SLNC) CARES Grant for $10,000 to purchase 14 portable Wi-Fi hotspots for students.

A portable Wi-Fi hotspot is a pocket sized mobile router. Students are able to take the Wi-Fi hotspot home with them and setup an internet connection. With the signal that the hotspot creates, the student can connect to their smartphone, tablet or laptop to the internet.

“With a large percentage of our students working full-time jobs and supporting families, having access to internet at home via a Wi-Fi hotspot allows students to truly work at their own pace in a safe, comfortable environment,” Joel Ferdon, director of Library Services, said. “The SCC Library also has 45 Chromebooks that students can check out along with the Wi-Fi hotspots.”

If students are interested in checking out a Chromebook and/or Wi-Fi hotspot, they may contact Ferdon at jferdon0525@stanly.edu or call 704-991-0261.

The SCC Library is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This program was supported by grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (IMLS grant number LS-246551-OLS-20).
