The Stanly Community College Computer-Integrated Machining (CIM) program recently received accreditation for the next five years from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS).

NIMS, a nationally recognized organization that was established in 1995, is the industry standard for skills training, validation and credentialing. According to NIMS at www.nims-skills.org, “The vision of NIMS is to empower organizations and individuals through workforce standards and credentials to build a thriving and globally competitive manufacturing industry.”

“We are excited to be accredited by NIMS. It is an excellent way to test the students skills and build their resume,” said Ryan Love, program head, Computer-Integrated Machining, who currently holds NIMS certifications in Measurement, Materials & Safety, Benchwork and Layout, Manual Milling Skills I, CNC Lathe Operations and CNC Milling Operations. “When students leave Stanly Community College they are not only walking away with an Associate’s degree in Applied Science, with a focus in Computer-Integrated Machining, they are also leaving with third-party credentials from NIMS in specialized areas such as Manual Machining, Grinding, CNC Programming and Operations. In the CIM program, we teach students to think on their feet and get the job done. I want to personally thank the companies in our area that worked with us in making the accreditation possible.”

The Computer-Integrated Machining curriculum program at SCC prepares students with the analytical, creative and innovative skills necessary to take a production idea from an initial concept through design, development and production, resulting in a finished product.

Coursework may include manual machining, computer applications, computer-aided machining (CAM), blueprint interpretation, advanced computerized numeric control (CNC) equipment, basic and advanced machining operations, and precision.
