Hospital rates hiked

Stanly County Hospital authorities announced Thursday that effective Oct. 1 room rates will be increased $10 per day.

This will make the cost of a semi-private room average $93 per day and ward beds will average $84 per day.

Private room rates will increase to an average of $102 per day, with a private room with private bath priced at $105 per day.

Emergency room charges were increased $2.50 per visit.

Hank Aaron

Hank Aaron, baseball’s home run king, was going to speak at Pfeiffer College on Sept. 29.

Scholarship

Allison B. Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Harris, and Dane Perry, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Perry, were semifinalists in the 1965-66 Merit Scholarship competition.

United Nations

Mrs. Jack Kearns of Badin, mother of two sons and five-year member of the Badin Home Demonstration Club, was Stanly County’s 11th HD delegate to the United Nations.

She would leave Sunday on a week’s trip to the United Nations headquarters in New York.

ABC

A $300 donation had been made to the Combined Charities drive by the now-dissolved Citizens for Legal Control.

This money represented surplus funds which were contributed to the committee in its recent efforts to establish Alcoholic Beverage Control stores in Albemarle and Norwood.

Memorial Award

The first Kerley Memorial Award for competencies in nursing practice at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem had been presented to Brenda Morton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Morton of Albemarle.

Optimist

Albemarle Optimist Club members were calling on everyone in the county and beyond to develop a great respect for the law and law enforcement officers. The observance of a project “Respect for the Law” was beginning now and would be concentrated during the next six weeks.

Court of Honor

The largest Court of Honor ever held was to be at Central School Auditorium with nine boys receiving Eagle Awards. They were William A. Beeker and Craig J. Smith Jr., of Troop 29, Albemarle; Oscar Bolch, Jimmy W. Lambert and Johnny Poplin of Troop 51, Endy; Johnny Eagle and William Litaker of Troop 82, Albemarle; David Plowman of Troop 95, Norwood; and Norman Rogers of Troop 129, Richfield.

Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1980

United Way

The 1980 United Way Campaign in Stanly County would get underway with kickoff festivities Oct. 3 in the parking lot between Central United Methodist Church and City Hall.

The Albemarle Senior High School Chorus, under the leadership of Carmella Hedrick, the North Stanly High School Band, under the leadership of Carlin Haworth, and the Albemarle Senior High School Band, under the leadership of Tim Hedrick, would perform throughout the day.

The goal for the campaign was just over $100,000.

Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1965

Strike

If a suitable contract between Collins & Aikman Corporation and the Textile Workers Union was not agreed upon this week, a strike would be called Friday night.

Two negotiating sessions were scheduled — on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Woodmen of the World Lodge Hall. The union had given its negotiating committee until Oct. 1 to have a contract with the company.

Trip

City Manager Wilson D. Coleman had returned from Montreal, Canada, where he had attended the 51st annual conference of the International City Managers Association.

Training

Peace Corp Director Sargent Shriver had announced that Judith Harris of Albemarle would continue her training for a short time in Israel before assignment to India.

Shriver said that, while tensions on the subcontinent were a factor in diverting Harris’ group over volunteers to Israel, use of a “third country” for further training purposes was not unusual. Similar additional training periods had been conducted in Quebec and in Mexico.

Fishing

Michael Whitley, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd A. Whitley of Albemarle, had landed a four and one-half pound largemouth bass while fishing at the dam on the old city lake west of town. With him at the time were Tommy Watson, 9, and Donnie Owens, 7, neither of whom had much luck.

Training

Pvt. Roger L. Mabry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry T. Mabry of Norwood, had completed advanced training as a cannoneer under the Reserve Enlistment Program at the Army Artillery and Missile Center, Fort Sill, Okla. Sept. 22.

Sales

The North Carolina Attorney General had ruled that schools were not to be permitted to sell pictures, candy, magazines or any other item which was in competition with private non-government business. The effect of the ruling had not yet been determined on the Albemarle City and Stanly County Schools.

Sept. 29, 1950

Enlisted

Five young men had enlisted in the Air Force for a four-year term of duty.

They were Darrell Marshall Harrington, 412 Wall St., Harry Max Shoe, 1207 W. Main St., John Stover Gaskin Jr., 265 N. Third St., all of Albemarle; Herman McRae Kirby of Oakboro and Spurgeon E. McLester of Albemarle.
