A man riding a four-wheeler on state roads was arrested Thursday afternoon by Oakboro’s police department with help from the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
Joshua Harbarger was arrested on felony charges of flee to elude, reckless driving to endanger, driving with a revoked license and motor vehicle violations. He also had an outstanding warrant and criminal summons. He bonded out of jail at $30,000 and has 33 other pending charges.
Sgt. Jason Eschert of Oakboro PD responded to a complaint about a subject riding an ATV on N.C. 205, checking at Variety Pickup, according to a post on the police department’s Facebook page.
As Eschert approached the ATV on Kids Club Alley, the driver sped off, committing multiple motor vehicle violations, down N.C. 742 heading towards Union County, police said.
Officials from the sheriff’s offices of both Union and Stanly counties converged in the area to assist Oakboro as the subject turned right on Carpenter Road and right on Rish Road. The driver went off-road through fields heading over to St. Timothy Road before getting back on Route 742.
Eventually, the suspect went into another field and got off his vehicle in the woods, police said. Both the ATV and subject were found shortly thereafter, which included the use of a K-9 unit from Union County.
Oakboro Police Chief T.J. Smith said he wanted to thank the various agencies for their teamwork in apprehending the subject.
