The first positive COVID-19 case was reported in Stanly County on March 20, 2020. Since then, Stanly County Health Department has interviewed more than 2,000 COVID-19 positive individuals as part of its case investigation efforts.

Case investigation has shown that 76 percent of cases are attributed to close contact with a person who is positive for COVID-19.

“Please don’t become complacent,” warns David Jenkins, Stanly County Health and Human Services director. “The data show that cases are increasing in the county. In our case investigation we find that people are contracting the virus from friends and family members. We need to continue to be diligent in our prevention efforts. When you follow COVID-19 guidelines you are supporting keeping businesses open and children in schools”

Stanly County can turn these trends around, Jenkins advises.

The Health Department still stresses the 3 Ws:

● Wear a mask over your mouth and nose
● Wait 6 feet apart
● Wash your hands frequently

If you are identified as a contact (within 6 feet for 15 minutes) you will be required to quarantine for 14 days from the last time you were with the positive person. Quarantine means you stay home and away from other people in your household. It is suggested that you get tested six days after your last contact with the COVID-19 positive person.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, stay home and contact your healthcare provider:

● nausea or vomiting;

● diarrhea;

● cough;

● shortness of breath;

● fever;

● chills;

● repeated shaking with chills;

● headache;

● sore throat;

● muscle pain; and

● new loss of taste or smell.
