The Stanly County Health Department Dental Clinic is a recipient of the 2020 North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Child Health Recognition Award in the Local Health Department category.
This award honors health department programs that improve the health of North Carolina children. As part of this recognition, the Stanly County Health Department Dental Clinic received a $10,000 grant from the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation. These monies are to be used on special projects, staff development or
educational materials.
“We are very appreciative of The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation to honor our dental clinic for its services to our children,” Health and Human Services Director Dave Jenkins said. “We are fortunate to have such an outstanding dental program in Stanly County that is directed by Dr. Mindy Turner, dental director/pediatric dentist. She leads the effort to provide quality and timely dental services for our children at the clinic as well as in the schools.”
The Dental Clinic was honored for providing dental care to all children in Stanly County, especially low income and special needs children. Children covered by Medicaid, N.C. Health Choice or private insurance are seen as well as uninsured children. Atrium Health Stanly provides operating room privileges to Turner to perform dental services in their operating room on children who cannot receive treatment in the office.
The dental services provided by the Stanly County Dental Clinic are not limited to the office. Staff members have offered school-based dental sealant services to all second and third grades enrolled in Stanly’s 11 elementary since 2016. Since 2019, sixth and seventh graders enrolled in the county’s four middle schools have been offered dental sealant services through a Duke Endowment grant.
The Stanly County Dental Clinic serves as a training location for students enrolled in dental profession programs from UNC Chapel Hill School of Dentistry (dentists and dental hygienists), Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (dental assistants) and Montgomery Community College (dental assistants).
