At Monday’s meeting of the Oakboro Town Council, organizers of a recent 5K race approached the council to arrange another race at the town’s park.

Jeremy Grimm of OMR Ultra spoke to the council during the public comments section about scheduling a race. OMR Ultra, an independent for-profit company, according to Grimm, helped operate a race at Oakboro District Park for the Mint Hill Lions’ Club in September.

Grimm said approximately 75 runners took part in the race and he hopes a future race — proposing for a 5K for Jan. 2, 2021, could get between 100 and 150 runners.

Oakboro Parks and Recreation Department Director Josh Almond said he was not aware of any events scheduled for the date.

Councilman Mike Efird asked the group who will benefit from the event. Grimm said profits would go to OMR Ultra directly at about $30 per runner. Grimm said most parks charge a permit fee to the group of between $200 and $250.

The town council did not make a decision on allowing the event in the meeting. Efird said he would like for the council to have further discussion on hosting it.
