At the November meeting of the Norwood Town Council, board members and Town Administrator Scott Howard spoke about downtown revitalization.

Howard said two or three months ago improvements started with plans for the repaving of a parking lot centrally located behind buildings which front U.S. Highway 52 on Campbell Street.

Mayor Harold Thompson later invited N.C. Rep. Wayne Sasser and the state’s assistant speaker of the house Dan Gurley to visit Norwood, who said the town should do a project on the entire street, which it did.

Howard said the town targeted state funds for the project left over from last year’s budget and are still going for those funds. He said the town has not nailed down a list for which organizations for which to apply, but he said some chances may be available for public art or similar projects.

The town is also planning a series of drop-in events for the public so citizens can weigh in on potential plans for the downtown area.

Future plans will not be a master plan for the entire town, he added, but for the Main Street/Campbell Street area, the basic downtown district. He said he wants to add those plans to an overall master plan.

The process of events will begin in January.
