With the Stanly County Board of Elections officially certifying the results of the Nov. 3 election, two new candidates for offices emerged while results in two other local races changed.

W. Demar Huntley received 102 write-in votes to win the second seat available on the Badin Town Council. He joins incumbent Gary Lowder on the town’s council; Lowder won reelection with 442 votes.

The write-in race for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor went to Howard Moose with 290 votes. Curtis Furr finished second with 100 votes and Bobby Barfield was third with 64.

In New London, the third and final spot up for grabs on the town’s Board of Commissioners turned into a tie between Johnny Chestnut and Bill Peak, each receiving 208 votes. Daniel Phillips still finished in first with, 221 with Richard Kimmer in second with 220 votes.

The procedure to break the tie will not move forward until the recount deadline clears, which is Monday. If the race is still tied after a recount, which either candidate can request, the Board of Elections will determine the winner by lot, such as by drawing names out of a hat, straws or coin toss.

The Board of Elections also vacated Terry Almond’s election to the town council, with Almond’s recent passing. According to Town Administrator Carolyn Capps, the Richfield Board of Commissioners will have 90 days from Friday’s ruling to nominate a person to fill the seat.
