During the first part of 1903, Killis Almond, who lived just south of Norwood, built what the Stanly Enterprise called a houseboat. It was “30 feet long by 7 wide and has a draught of only a few inches when loaded.”

Once the boat was fully operational, Almond would take clients and friends on excursions on the Yadkin River north towards the Narrows and south into South Carolina.

Today’s photo, from the History Center collection, shows Almond and his brother Joe on a hunting trip that possibly was one of these excursions.

Killis Almond is second from the right holding the coffee cup and his brother Joe is in the center smoking a pipe and holding a shotgun.
