Information on how high school sports may change with realignment for next year was recently released by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

As projections had stated weeks ago, North Stanly will now be one of 54 schools in the 2A Western Region, moving up after having spent eight academic years in 1A. North’s Average Daily Membership (ADM) is 669.

The Yadkin Valley Conference will look different as well with both Chatham Central and North Moore moving to the Eastern Region. Albemarle, Gray Stone and South Stanly will continue to be 1A while West Stanly remains in the 2A Western Region.

In terms of the Wells Fargo State Cup Points, one of three stat categories used to determine realignment, West Stanly had the most last year with 157.5, followed by South Stanly (155), Gray Stone Day (120), Albemarle (115) and North Stanly (112.5).

At this week’s meeting of the NCHSAA’s Board of Directors, the Board approved dropping the highest Identified Student Percentage (ISP) because natural disasters had created anomalies in the formula being used this year to determine next year’s realignment.

A press release issued Friday by the NCHSAA stated member schools received the posted information in regards to the realignment.

The first draft of the conferences for the 2021-2022 season is expected to be released Dec. 10.
