Stanly Community College’s Carolina Auction Academy recently held its student auction at Hinson’s Auction Barn in Oakboro.

Students braved the challenges of the COVID-19 restrictions, as well as work limitations, long distances and weather issues to complete the 96-hour course.

Students are now eligible to take the state exam to become licensed auctioneers.

“Students from both North and South Carolina worked hard to master the program. A class requirement includes conducting a live auction with proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The students have a lot of
fun conducting the live auction,” said Bill O’Neal, CAA instructor.

CAA is approved by the North Carolina Auctioneer Licensing Board, South Carolina Auctioneer Commission and is approved by the National Auctioneer Association. Coursework includes rules and regulations, the chant, accounting,
livestock, auto auctions, advertising, appraisals, running an auction facility, ringwork and more.

“Congratulations to the students for their hard work and dedication,” Ivan Broadwell, CAA instructor, said. “We are thankful to all the individuals who helped make this year’s graduating class a success.”

Following tradition, the student auction was held at Hinson’s Auction Barn, under strict COVID-19 restrictions. Jeff Hinson, a former CAA graduate, opened his facility to the graduating students just like his father, Ted Hinson, has done for so many years in the past.

Graduates for the December 2020 Carolina Auction Academy program include Jennifer Williams of Olin, Cathy Phillips of Oakboro, Peggy Carpenter of Norwood, Richard Myers of Clemmons, James Smith of Charlotte, Brock Veal of Clover, South Carolina, Tracy Dilligard of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Tamara Beaver of Concord.

Registration is open for the next Carolina Auction Academy program, which begins in February 2020. To register, contact Betty O’Neal, CAA Program Head, at 704-991-0142 or eoneal8048@stanly.edu. For more information, visit the college’s website at www.stanly.edu.
