West Stanly cross country sweeps conference meet

The West Stanly Cross Country program swept a pair of Rocky River Conference trophies at the RRC Championship Meet Dec. 9 at Oakboro District Park.

The men’s team took home the title with 22 points, its second consecutive year with a team championship. The Colts finished ahead of second place Central Academy (51 points) and third place Mt. Pleasant (62 points).

Meanwhile, the women’s program took home the league championship trophy for a fifth consecutive season. The Colt women, paced by Natalie Almond’s first place finish and her third straight RRC Girls Runner of the Year plaque, took the team honors with 23 points. Central Academy finished second with 33 points and Mt. Pleasant third with 81 points. Almond’s 5K time of 20:12 was followed by teammates Savanah Hendzel (22:17), Makalyn Morton (22:55), Karsyn Underwood (24:05), Laney McCollum (25:19) and Susanna Martinez (26:05), who all finished Top-10 overall to secure an All-Conference spot.

James Shue was named the RRC Boys Runner of the Year, taking first place individual honors with a 5K time of 17:37. Also finishing the league’s championship race in the Top-10 and named to the All-Conference team for the Colts were Blayne Morton (18:57), Elijah Morton (19:02), Camden Misenheimer (19:09), Carson Wells (19:18) and Nathan Marks (19:32).

Both teams earned an automatic entry to the NCHSAA Midwest Regional meet, scheduled for Jan. 16 at Fisher River Park in Dobson.
