South men, West women claims wins at SCS county meet

Piney Point Golf Club in Norwood Monday was the site of the 2020 Stanly County Schools cross-country championship.

The South Stanly men and West Stanly women claimed team victories while West runners both claimed individual honors at the meet.

South’s men finished with 27 team points, three fewer than second-place West (30) while North Stanly finished third with 80 points.

Sophomore Davis Wright finished second overall and first for the Bulls in 17:29 while his teammates Ranfere Garcia and Jayden Oliver finished third and fourth overall with times of 18:31 and 19:04, respectively. Josh Huneycutt, a freshman, was fourth for the Bulls and sixth overall with a 19:19 and sophomore Mason Huneycutt rounded out South’s top five finishing 12th overall in 20:12.

James Shue, a junior, finished first overall and for West with a time of 17:23 winning individual honors by six seconds. Camden Misenheimer was second for West and fifth overall, earning All-County honors with a 19:16 while teammate Austin Huneycutt was seventh overall in 19:23. Rounding out the top five for the Colts was Elijah Morton (eighth-19:36) and Blayne Morton (ninth-19:40).

Nicholas McClure earned All-County honors and was first for the Comets finishing 10th overall in 19:52. Caleb Lemons was second for North and 17th overall in 25:14, followed on his team by Toby Mullins (18th-25:42), Chandler Hartsell (19th-26:29) and Jacob Hatley (20th-28:18).

Christian Poplin was the top finisher for Albemarle in 16th with a time of 24:42 while teammate Ashton Cason was 21st overall in 34:29.

The West Stanly women finished first as a team with a score of 18 while South was second with 43 points. North Stanly did not have enough runners participate to finish as a team.

West’s Natalie Almond earned individual honors; the junior finished first overall and for West in 20:41. She was followed on her team by Savannah Hendzel (third-22:39), Makayln Morton (fifth-23:50), Holly Hatch (seventh-24:07) and Karysn Underwood (eighth-24:17).

Jacy Noble was the top finisher for South finishing fourth overall in 23 minutes, followed on her team by Keeli Crisco who earned All-County honors with a ninth-place finish in 24:51. Kate Cribb was third for South and 13th overall in 26:09 followed on the Bulls by Jocelyn Vazquez (15th-27:29) and Kaylee Helms (16th-27:32).

North junior Lexi Goode was the top finisher for the Comets and second overall with a 22:38 while her teammate, Milena Hernandez, earned All-County honors with a sixth place finish in 23:53. Freshman Gia Dunlap joined Goode and Hernandez on the All-County team with a 10th place finish.

The regionals will be Jan. 16, 2021, with the 1A county teams slated to run in the Midwest Regionals at Salisbury Community Park. West will compete in the 2A Midwest Regionals at Fisher River Park, hosted by Surry Central.
