At Monday’s meeting of the Stanly County Board of Commissioners, Chairman Bill Lawhon opened by informing those in attendance and watching online of the passing of the wife of one of his fellow board members.

Lawhon mentioned the absence of Commissioner Lane Furr, saying the reason he was not in attendance was the death of Furr’s wife, Phyllis, to something COVID-related Sunday.

The chairman entertained a motion to give Furr an excused absence from the meeting, which was made, seconded and passed unanimously.

Lawhon also asked for people to keep Furr and his family in their prayers.

Other commissioners mentioned supporting Furr and family, including Scott Efird, who in his public comments said, “It’s tough. You don’t think about (COVID) until it hits home, that it can’t happen to you.”
