The North Stanly women’s basketball team needed a win Tuesday night over visiting Uwharrie Charter in order to take control of the top the standings of the Yadkin Valley Conference.

After dropping the first two sets, the Comets rallied to win the next three and improve to 9-1 overall and 7-0 in conference play with a 3-2 win.

Scores of the match were 21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22 and 15-13 in favor of the Comets.

Cleo Carter led North with 20 kills with Taegan Lowder adding 17 kills.

Senior Alex Childress, in her first game back with the Comets since undergoing appendecitis surgery, drove the North offense with 53 assists and tied with freshman Anniston Talbert with four service aces each.

Head coach Jamie Kimrey said one of North’s goals this season was to win the first set, adding “most teams after losing the first two sets of a much will just give in.”

However, the coach added his team “showed a lot of poise and toughness with how they kept their composure. There was never a sense of panic. There is a lot to be said for (the team’s) senior leadership and the calm and confidence the seniors bring to a team in those situations.”

Kimrey said the Eagles are a “good, well-coached team” adding his team felt if they could serve better they would be able to turn the tide.

“We were able to do that along with some scrappy defense which gave us the edge we needed,” Kimrey said.

The win gives North a one-game lead in the conference standings over the Eagles (9-1, 6-1 YVC) with one more match to play tonight at South Stanly.
