Construction crews stayed busy during the pandemic of 2020, including at a new credit union branch in Albemarle.

Steve Brown, branch manager of the State Employees Credit Union in Albemarle, said in a recent interview a second branch, located at the corner of N.C. Highway 740 and the Northeast Connector, should be open in April.

Brown said the land was first purchased in October 2018 and crews broke ground on the new branch’s construction in August, saying progress on the location has been slowed by the pandemic.

Both branches will eventually be open for business, Brown said, adding the new branch would be more convenient for customers as well as to help alleviate the volume of business at the branch on N.C. Highway 24-27.

“It will be by trial and error to see what volume (the new branch) has,” Brown said.

The new branch will also provide an opportunity for some of the 29 employees to transfer to the new location, meaning some jobs may become open at both in the future, according to Brown.

While appearing to be a bigger building than the existing branch, which Brown said many people have asked about, he added the size of the building will be about the same and be a one-story building.
