Local genealogy enthusiasts have a new online tutorial to help with their adventures into discovering their history.

“It’s something I’ve done since I was a child,” said Wanda Gantt, speaking on the topic of genealogy.

She recently volunteered to host a four-part series on how to begin one’s research and share the resources available in the Margaret Johnston Heritage Room at the Stanly County History Center, 157 N. Second St., Albemarle. Each segment is around 10 minutes long.

In the series, Gantt, a member of the Yadkin River Patriots chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, discusses sources such as marriage, birth and death records, Census reports and other ways to get started. She also looks at common migration patterns for families, military records and other sources to further track one’s lineage.

In 2019, visitors from 19 other states signed the guestbook at the history center, possibly accessing the several books, microfilm and other materials available to track their ancestry.

“I love genealogy. I enjoy helping people find their roots,” Gantt said.
