West Stanly’s undefeated streak in men’s basketball to start the season was on the line Tuesday night when the Colts traveled to Mount Pleasant.

Clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch helped lift West to a 62-53 win, improving to 7-0 on the season.

Austin Medlin led West (7-0, 5-0 RRC) with 22 points, including 6-of-7 at the foul line. Jake Bartell added a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds and Tayshawn Haywood scored 10 points, including 7-of-9 on free throws.

The Colts struggled from the field, hitting 19-of-58 shots (32.8 percent), but hit 18-of-23 (78.3 percent) at the foul line, including down the stretch to help West maintain the lead late.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well and I thought our shot selection wasn’t the best at times, but some of that is due to Mount Pleasant and how hard they played on defense,” West head coach John Thompson said.

Trevor Kelly led West with 13 rebounds playing strong defense, which Thompson said without it and his rebounding the Colts do not win the game.

West’s upcoming game at Forest Hills was postponed due to the Jackets having to go into quarantine, so the Colts will be off until Tuesday’s game at Central Academy.
