The Norwood Center Rural Volunteer Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire a little after midnight on Friday.

The fire originated in the area of a baseboard heater in the bedroom of an old two-story farmhouse in Norwood along N.C. Highway 731 between U.S. Highway 52 and Fork Road, Stanly County Fire Marshal Danny Barham said.

Ansonville Fire Department, Aquadale Volunteer Fire Department and Mount Gilead Fire Department also assisted.

Barham said it took firefighters about three hours to get the fire under control. The fire quickly reached the roof. In terms of damage, he said the house was a “total loss.”

The owner of the home was not inside and no fire personnel were injured.

Barham listed the cause of the fire as “undetermined,” though it likely stemmed from the area of the baseboard heater.
