Award
Fred T. Morgan, features editor for The Stanly News & Press whose Musings columns appeared on the editorial page each Tuesday, had won a second place award from the North Carolina Press Association for a column he wrote about Honeycutt Shoe Shop.
Snow
Snow fell most of the day on Friday, accumulating 2.75 inches officially in Albemarle, and piling up deeper levels in the northern section of the county.
The mercury fell to 2 degrees by early Saturday morning, establishing a new low for the weather season and freezing the snow and water on all streets.
Oakboro
Oakboro had received approval for a federal grant for $8,500 for use in developing the town’s park. The grant would be matched by Oakboro to make $17,000 available for clearing, grading, landscaping and fencing work at the park. Plans also called for bleachers and a Little League diamond.
