Tuesday, Feb. 15, 1966
Pfeiffer
Dr. J. Lem Stokes II, president of Pfeiffer College, had been authorized by the executive committee of the Board of Trustees to announce the appointment of W.I. Gibson, vice president, to a new post at the college. He would be vice president in charge of fundraising and would also have responsibility for working various federal projects that provide financial assistance to the college.
Engineer
Atomic engineer Sam McManus, son of Mrs. Nell McManus and the late G.C. McManus, representing the Atomic Energy Commission, had served as project engineer in the trials of the Nevada nuclear rocket engine system in Jackson Flats, Nevada. The rocket engine was tested successfully.
Checkers
Elbert Lowder was in St. Petersburg, Florida, this week, where was defending champion in the Florida Open Checkers Tournament.
Navy
Two Norwood youths and one from New London had enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
They were: Clarence Edward Hopkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Hopkins of Norwood; Ronnie Lee Page, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clavin Page of Norwood; and Oden Stokes Burris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Laton O. Stokes of New London.
Page and Burris were receiving training at Great Lakes, Illinois, and Hopkins was in recruit training in San Diego, California.
