Anthony Griffin Jr., a Carolina Panthers fan from Stanly County, scored the last $200,000 prize in the Carolina Panthers scratch-off game.

Griffin, who works at a grocery store as a stocker, said he was on his way to get his annual physical when he stopped at Variety Pickup on North Main Street in Oakboro, bought the $5 ticket, and saw his big prize.

“When I got to the doctor,” Griffin said, “I felt like I was having a heart attack.” He told the nurse about his win and she said “no wonder your BP is high.”

As Griffin collected his prize Friday at lottery headquarters, he said that his check-up turned out fine, but he is “still in a state of shock.” He took home $141,501 after state and federal tax withholdings.

“I’m just going to take care of my family,” he said, when asked about plans for his prize money.

Carolina Panthers scratch-offs are eligible for the third and final 2020 Carolina Panthers Second-Chance Drawing. The drawing offers a grand prize that includes season tickets for the 2021 season and membership in the team’s exclusive FIFTY 3 Club with all the club’s perks.

The deadline to enter the drawing is March 31 and the drawing is scheduled for April 7.

Ticket sales from scratch-offs make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million per year for education. For details on how $3.8 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Stanly County last year, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
