The Pfeiffer University men’s golf team captured their first team tournament win since the 2016 season after firing a 295 on day two of the Diamondback Invitational hosted by Mars Hill.

Pfeiffer last won a tournament team title at the King College Invitational on Sept. 26, 2016.

In addition to the team title, sophomore Kevin Burris , a former South Stanly golf standout, shot a four-under par 68 on day two to finish his tournament with a 139 total which was good for five-under par.

Pfeiffer freshman Elijah Todd (Roebuck, S.C.) had a good second round, shooting an even-par 72 to finish at four-over, taking second place in the field.  Pfeiffer’s Pedro Torres (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Ezekiel Sigmon (Connolly Springs, N.C.) also had top-10 finishes, with Torres finishing in a tie for fourth place with a two-day total of 156 (+12) while Sigmon finished sixth after shooting a 160 (+16)

Freshmen Wesley Page (Gibsonville, N.C.) and Devin Harwood, both competed in their first collegiate event, with Page finishing in tie for 12th place with a 165 (+21) and Harwood finishing with a 176 (+32) while competing as an individual.

Pfeiffer head coach David Gianferante was pleased with the performance of his young team.

“Our players exhibited great team play this past week.  We teach a team game, and that team mindset helps boost the confidence of our young players and allows them to successfully play the mental game of golf, which results in success on the course,” he said.

“This was a great team win for our program.”

The team final of 603 (+27) was the best since the 2016 team shot a 554 (-6) at the Country Club of Bristol during the King College Invitational.

Individually, Burris came within four strokes of tying the best two-round total in program history held by Nathan Bull, who shot a two-day total of 135, also at the King College Invitational in September of 2016.

The Falcons will turn their attention to hosting the Pfeiffer Invitational March 1-2 at The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes in Hardeeville, S.C.
