Scholarship

Two Albemarle High School seniors had been awarded John M. Morehead Scholarships for study at the University of North Carolina.

They were Henry Thomas Webb III, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.T. Webb, and Dane Perry, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Perry.

Theft

A soap sample dispenser had developed slippery fingers Tuesday morning, because, somehow, $12 stolen from a woman’s handbag in a parked car, had gotten concealed inside the cap he was wearing.

Leastwise that’s where the officers said it was recovered after they apprehended him and charged him with larceny.

Street

Third Street, from North Street to South Street, now presented a well-illuminated thoroughfare. The fluorescent lighting presented an appearance almost as “light as day” and the fixtures made an interesting pattern against the night sky. This section of street was expected to become a major part of the beltline around the business section in the next few years.

Student

Crowell Bowers Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Bowers of Norwood, had been elected president of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers at N.C. State University.

Bowers as also awarded the Distinguished Military Student Medal at the college for his work in the Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Johnny Mathis

Johnny Mathis and Our Young Generation were scheduled to give a concert at Pfeiffer College on March 9 in the college gymnasium.

Art

Talmadge Moose of Albemarle had a one-man art show of a collection of his paintings on exhibit during March at the Charlotte Public Library.

Elections

The first of March had come and gone and still no candidates had filed for most of the Stanly County offices.

The Board of Elections office only had two candidates to enter the races. Stansil Aldridge was seeking Democratic nomination for coroner and Oscar Speights had filed for reelection as North Albemarle constable.
