Spelling Bee

Neil Riemann, an eighth grade student at Richfield Elementary School, repeated his 1980 victory Tuesday in the Stanly County Schools’ spelling bee.

He was to represent the county in the regional bee in Charlotte April 17.

He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. J. Michael Riemann of Misenheimer.

Leigh Morton, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Morton, a sixth grade student at Norwood, was the second place winner, while Chris Wallace, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Kinney Wallace, a Locust eighth-grader, placed third.

Alcoa

Officials of the North Carolina Department of Economic Resources and Economic Development have approved the impact statement submitted by the Aluminum Company of America for its addition of a third potline at Badin Works.

Ralph McAlister, works manager at Badin, received a letter from Raleigh stating that approval had been given by the Division of Environmental Management and that the information had been sent to the Atlanta office of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, which must also give its approval.

McAlister said that the permit necessary for the addition to get underway was the Prevention of Significant Deterioration to air quality. He said the company made it clear in the statement how it will provide for any pollution abatement needed in connection with the third potline, which was estimated to cost around $70 million.
