Tuesday, March 15, 1966

Officer

Chief Warrant Officer Larry Mullis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Brandon L. Mullis of Albemarle, had received eight Air Medals for his work in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot.

Mullis was pilot of Col. Hal Moore’s TOC (Tactical Operations Center) helicopter and had been in action over Vietnam, especially in the vicinity of Bong Son.

Councilor

Charles G. Frye had been elected senior councilor of Albemarle Council No. 868 of United Commercial Travelers.

Other officers elected for next year were Dillon Harris, junior councilor; Stansil Aldridge, past senior councilor; and Walt McLawhorn, re-elected secretary and treasurer.

Montgomery

Everything was in readiness for the historical tour to three of the ancient courthouse seats of old Montgomery County from 1779 to 1841. The motorcade would leave from 813 W. Main St. March 16, led by experienced officials.

This tour promised to be an important day in the annals of Stanly County history, according to Charles H. McSwain, president of the Stanly County Historical Society.

Several Stanly County people who had lived in old Tindalsville and old Lawrenceville as children were planning to join the tour. A woman who had some silver coins that were burned in the courthouse fire in March 1843 was planning to exhibit them.

Grigg and Webb

Albemarle School Superintendent Claud Grigg had announced to the City School Board that he would retire at the end of the current school year. This was Grigg’s 47th year of activity in the field of public service.

The City School Board had accepted with regret his decision to retire. Immediately afterward they unanimously voted to promote H.T. “Toby” Webb to this position. Webb had been president of Albemarle Senior High School since 1960.

Federal Pacific

Federal Pacific Electric Company had started work on the completion of their building near Hall’s Ferry Junction south of New London.

The original section of the building was now being placed in service, housing some 78,000 square feet of manufacturing area.

North Stanly

North Stanly FFA boys had won first place in the 12th annual Pee Dee Federation and judging contest held at West Montgomery High School.

Ronnie Burleson of North was the high scoring individual. Other members of the winning team were Butch Brooks, Gene Heglar, Harold Blalock, Terry Frick and John Ott.
