Marriage

On March 15, 1906, Martin L. Burris, 18, and Florence Talbert, 15, stood before Magistrate John M. Morton and pledged their lives together “until death do us part.”

“We have worked together, plowed together and raised children together,” Florence said and it to this “togetherness” that she attributed the endurance of their marriage. In 1981 they were celebrating their 75th anniversary.

They had eight daughters and four sons, including two sets of twins, all of whom were born at home. They had more than 120 grandchildren and great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren by 1981.

He was a retired farmer who also retired at 69 as a lumber mill worker. She was a homemaker.

They remembered buying sugar for 4 cents a pound and coffee for 7 cents.
