South Stanly golf teams win first two matches

The South Stanly men’s and women’s golf teams both improved to 2-0 this week.

Last Thursday,South traveled to Sanford to defeat Chatham Central 151 to 167 in women’s golf and 167 to 192 in men’s. The course was very wet due to recent rains, but Jackie Burris made the needed adjustments and was medalist of the women’s match by four shots with a score of 47. Emma Crump and Savanna Hurley added scores of 51 and 53 to round out the team score and help top the Lady Bearcats. Gillian Kitchings (51), Reagan Mize (58) and Reagan Murray (58) completed the team score for Chatham Central.

South men’s golf team was led by sophomore Reid Smith, who was the medalist for the men’s match as he eagled the par-5 ninth hole to shoot an even par round of 35 in the wet conditions. Also adding qualifying scores to the team total were sophomores Dustin Hurley (40), Davis Wright (45) and freshman Luke Dennis (47).

This past Thursday, March 25, South Stanly narrowly defeated both Gray Stone golf teams at Piney Point Golf Club.

The medalist for the match was Gray Stone’s Katelyn Griggs who shot 41 and edged out South’s Jackie Burris (43).

After a double-bogey on the first hole, Burris played head-to-head evenly with Griggs which proved to be the difference for the day.

South edged Gray Stone by two strokes, 147 to 149, and was led by Burris (43), Savanna Hurley (50) and Shyane Burleson (54). Gray Stone’s Aliza Simpson (54) and Layla Simpson (54) rounded out the Knight’s scoring.

The men’s match was even closer with South Stanly winning by one stroke, 175 to 176. score of South 175 to Gray Stone’s 176.

The Bulls’ one-shot victory was led by freshman, Luke Dennis, who shot 39. Dennis was the medalist for the match. Adding to the team score for South were Dustin Hurley (43), Max Clodfelter (46), Reid Smith and Davis Wright both shot 47.

Gray Stone was led by Logan Carriker with a 42 while Wyatt Reeder (43), Hayden Lambert (45) and Kyle Van Horn (46) finished out the team total score.
