Michael Ferri of Charlotte is a previous $1 million lottery winner, and last week his good fortune delivered again, winning him a $100,000 Millionaire Maker prize.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I had to look at it a few times. I was very surprised.”

Ferri purchased his winning $30 ticket from the Express Stop BP on University City Boulevard in Charlotte.

“My brother said, ‘Why do you hit it and I never do?’” he recalled, laughing. “And I said, ‘I don’t know, I guess I’m lucky!’ ”

Ferri won $1 million on a HIT $5,000 scratch-off ticket back in April 2019.

He claimed his Millionaire Maker prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh and took home $70,759 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

“I’m going to put some of it back in to my savings account,” said Ferri. “And the rest, I’m just going to keep for taxes and stuff like that.”

Millionaire Maker launched this month with 30 top prizes of $1 million and 10 $100,000 prizes. Twenty-six top prizes and eight $100,000 prizes remain to be won.

Ticket sales from scratch-offs like Millionaire Maker make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million per year for education.
