After finishing the regular season with an undefeated record, the North Stanly football team will not be able to enjoy the fruits of its labor in the playoffs.

The Comets, who finished 6-0 in the regular season winning the Yadkin Valley Conference title, have opted out of the playoffs due to a COVID-19 quarantine. The information was confirmed Monday afternoon in an email to Beverly Pennington, director of student services and athletics for Stanly County Schools.

North Stanly posted the team’s first undefeated regular season in the school’s 58-year history and had earned a No. 1 seed in the 1AA Western Region. The Comets had the home field advantage potentially up to and including the regional finals.

According to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, with the brackets released, the game goes as a forfeit with Polk County advancing to the next round of the playoffs.

Football season will return for Stanly’s teams this August with the regular season.
