A man died Thursday evening after a collision with another car near the Stanly County Airport, according to Highway Patrol Sgt. E.T. Phillips.

At 6:12 p.m., Donnie Cook, 70, of China Grove was driving his 2007 Ford Ranger pickup truck west on Airport Road when he was struck after driving through the intersection of Melton Road. Ann Almond, 69, of Albemarle, who was driving a 2006 Dodge Caravan, failed to stop at the stop sign, entered the intersection and collided with Cook, Phillips said.

Cook was ejected from his car, Phillips said. He was airlifted to CMC Main in Charlotte, where he later died from his injuries.

Almond was also taken to CMC Main with non life-threatening injuries, Phillips said. She was expected to be discharged Monday.

Phillips said neither alcohol nor drugs played a factor in the collision and both cars were totaled.

Almond has been charged with failure to yield at a stop sign and misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle.
