SCECA presents Watson scholarships

The Stanly County Extension and Community Association has announced its 2021 Betty Watson Scholarship winners of $1,000 each.

The Betty Watson Scholarship is a memorial scholarship established in 1979 honoring the work of Watson, former Home Economist and Extension agent.

Applicants majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences or related area are given preference when selecting the scholarship winners.

Avery Carrick

Avery Carrick is the daughter of Jamie and Jennifer Carrick of Albemarle and is receiving a $1,000 scholarship.

She will graduate from North Stanly High School this spring and is a recent graduate of Stanly Community College with an associate’s degree.

She will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she intends to major in Nutrition and Exercise Science.

Abby Furr is the daughter of Chris and Kristi Furr of Albemarle and is receiving a $1,000 scholarship.

She graduated from Stanly Early College Monday and will attend Appalachian State University, where she is intends to major in Nutrition and Foods – Dietetics.

Both scholarship winners have a personal interest in foods and nutrition and hope to obtain undergraduate degrees in order to help folks learn to use nutritious foods and diet along with exercise to lead healthier lives and prevent illness.
