West Stanly wrestlers advance to state finals

In the 2A Midwest Wrestling Regionals last weekend at Cabarrus Arena and Events Center, West Stanly advanced a number of wrestlers into the 2A state finals.

Aidan Hiott won the regional title at 152 pounds for the Colts. Entering regionals with an 18-0 record, Hiott had a bye in the first round and then won a 9-1 majority decision over Mount Pleasant’s Ryan Barley. The West senior advanced to the regional finals with a 4-1 decision versus Jacob Price of Surry Central. Hiott won the regional title over East Lincoln’s Caleb Hines (21-3) with a 6-1 decision.

At 132 pounds, Bryson Whitley placed fourth after getting a pinfall in 1:12 over Lexington’s Luis De La Cruz and a 9-1 majority decision versus West Stokes’ Landon Neal. Whitley lost in the semifinals 5-2 to second-place finisher Jorden Scholossman of North Lincoln, then lost in the third-place match 4-1 to Bandys’ Bryson Burkett.

Andrew Becker earned fourth place for West at 220 pounds with a bye in the first round and a 2:42 pinfall in the second round against Surry Central’s Enoch Lopez. Becker lost by disqualification in the semifinals and lost the third-place match by forfeit.

The 2A state finals will be Saturday with an 8 a.m. weigh-in at Wheatmore High School in Trinity.
