Youth

Young people were pretty much the same, no matter whether they were from Albemarle or Australia, Stanly County or South Africa.

This was the conclusion reached by the Chamber of Commerce officials as American Field Services foreign students, representing 25 countries, had visited in homes in and around Albemarle.

They all liked fish, hush puppies, swimming, Cokes, barbecued chicken, mail and dancing.

Under the sponsorship of the Albemarle Chapter of AFS and the Chamber of Commerce, Bus Group No. 29 arrived shortly after 3 p.m. Friday from Greenville, South Carolina. Visitors were paired with their host families for a weekend of fun and fellowship.

The planned activities got underway at the Stony Gap Fish House, followed by a dance at the Central United Methodist Church Youth Center. At the dance, it was immediately evident that the foreign students had been thoroughly “Americanized” during the last year because they and their teenage hosts were able to do the same steps to “Beatle” type music flaring from the jukebox.

Stanfield

L.P. Beck, for the past several years principal of Stanfield School, had tendered his resignation and would not return to Stanfield for the coming year.

Music

Jerry Whitley and the Stanly Mountain Boys would be the top attraction at the big country music show, the Carolina Jamboree, at the Norwood Theatre in Norwood.
