Cemetery Fund

Charles B. Casper, who served from 1951 to 1973 as mayor of New London, presented a trust fund agreement to Mayor J. Wendell Chestnut.

The trust fund, on which Casper had been working since Feb. 2, was at $11,381.17, with donations received from 64 contributors.

Interest from this fund will be used to provide perpetual care for the town’s cemetery, instead of maintaining the cemetery with town and ad valorem taxes.

Veterans

A movement was launched to obtain and erect a marker honoring Stanly County veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Plans call for securing a granite marker similar to the one on the courthouse lawn in honor of World War I veterans and placing it just north of the World War I monument. It was estimated to cost $2,500.

Roy Earnhardt, Stanly veterans service officer, said: “Some of these paid the supreme sacrifice; some are still with us but with maimed bodies and minds; and some came through without suffering serious physical or mental injuries, but all of them put their lives on the line in defense of freedom.”

Softball

The West Stanly all-star team won first place in the State Dixie Youth Girls Deb (16-18) Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament in Whiteville July 16-19. This was the second consecutive year the team had won the tournament. West then advanced to the World Series in Gautier, Mississippi Aug. 7-12.

Last year West finished third in the series in Huntsville, Alabama.

Team members included Rachel Hughes, Debbie kGriffin, Carol Coble, Misty Tucker, Lori Brooks, Robin Barbee, Carla Kimrey, Michelle Cope, Anna Kennedy and Andrea Beach. Coaches were Karen Lowder, Anabel Speight and Patty Barbee.
