The West Stanly Colts varsity football team had already claimed two of the three wins needed to earn the Stanly Cup for the county championship this season.

However, the Colts may not get the chance to play that third and final county game after season-opening wins over South Stanly and Albemarle.

West Stanly Athletic Director Chad Yow confirmed to the Stanly News & Press this week that both the JV and varsity games this week and next were cancelled. The team has done so “for health and safety reasons” as the Colts go into COVID-19 quarantine.

This week’s game with Mount Pleasant as well next week’s games with North Stanly were cancelled.

As of Thursday, the Comets were still looking for an opponent to face next Friday. North’s next scheduled varsity game is Sept. 17 at home against Randleman.

West Stanly’s next scheduled varsity game is Sept. 17 when the Colts are slated to host Oak Grove.
