The 1938 edition of National Air Mail Week was celebrated during May of that year. Stanly County held a very special celebration marking the first airmail to arrive and later depart from the county.

The first airmail to be delivered to Stanly County arrived at the Hudson Farm on the Aquadale Road at 2:35 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 1938.

About 100 area residents, that included numerous children, were on hand to witness this momentous occasion.

Several Stanly County postmasters, seen in the photo, were on hand to greet the pilot on his arrival from Salisbury.

Leading up to this event, about 400 letters had been collected by local businesses and families to be sent with the plane when it left at 2:45 p.m., just a few minutes after it had arrived.
