Guard

Capt. Clarence R. Smith, 34, a native of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, had been named the new Air Force advisor to the 263rd Communications Squadron, N.C. Air National Guard, Badin. He replaced Maj. Arthur S. Gustafson (retired).

Smith had recently received a direct commission in the Air Force.

Fellowship

Oliven T. Cowan of Oakboro, formerly assistance county superintendent, had been awarded a teaching fellowship at the University of North Carolina upon recommendations of the Faculty Committee for 1966-67.

Rally

U.S. Rep. Robert Ellsworth of the Third Congressional District in Kansas would be the featured speaker at the Hobe Morton Rally presented by the Stanly County Republican Party Sept. 24.

The event honoring Albemarle attorney G. Hobart Morton would be in the National Guard Armory on North Third Street.
