As Stanly Community College celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year, the Stanly County Historical Society and Stanly County History Center invited two of its earliest instructors, Dan Hazlett and Kathy Efird Page, to share both college history and personal stories from their careers. The program will be at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Fellowship Center of Central United Methodist Church.

This event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is encouraged. To register go online to the Historical Society’s website historicstanly.org and select the Event Registration tab. Be sure to click submit after completing the online registration. Or call the Stanly County History Center at 704-986-3777. Be sure to include your name, telephone number and the number in your group.

Following the presentation, participants will go across the street to the Stanly County History Center to view the “SCC Through the Decades” display of news articles, photos and other items, including a “success stories” salute to 50 former students.

Dan Hazlett came from Marshall University in West Virginia to Albemarle as one of the original eight instructors when Stanly Technical Institute opened for curriculum classes in the fall of 1972.

Kathy Efird Page, a life-long Stanly County resident and graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and UNC Charlotte, joined the faculty in 1974. Both retired in 2003, but Kathy continued as an adjunct instructor for the next 13 years, and Dan is currently coordinating the college’s student organizations, including serving as advisor for the Student Government Association and SCC’s state and national award-winning Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter.
On Nov. 2, program attendees and others who are interested are invited to visit the SCC Albemarle campus at noon or 5:30 p.m. for a tour of the facilities. Those interested may sign up at the Oct. 26 program or by calling 704-986-3777 by Nov. 1.

Stanly Community College was chartered in July 1971 as Stanly Technical Institute and operated in what is now the E.E. Waddell Center until the opening of the campus at 141 College Dr., Albemarle, in 1976. The Crutchfield campus in Locust opened in 2003.
There is an online 50th Anniversary page featuring a photo gallery on the SCC website, stanly.edu.

On Jan. 9, 2022, an evening is planned on campus for all alumni, and in May a luncheon will be held to recognize retirees and others who were employed by the college for more than 20 years.

The Stanly Community College memorabilia display at the Stanly County History Center is open to the public 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month.
