The Yadkin River Patriots Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors the DAR Good Citizen Program and Essay Scholarship Competition in Stanly County each fall.

Local high schools select a senior who demonstrates leadership, dependability, service and patriotism in their schools, homes and communities.

The students selected, their families and school representatives are ordinarily invited to a Yadkin River Patriots Chapter meeting where students may read the essays they wrote and submitted with their Good Citizens applications.

In an effort to follow safety measures due to Covid-19 recommendations, school winners, their parents and accomplishments were announced at a smaller meeting instead.

The essay title was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving it.” The focus question was “How do the qualities of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership and patriotism) help support our nation?”

Students were required to complete the essay in two hours and were limited to no more than 550 words. They wrote their essays without assistance or additional resources.

Honored students were Darby Grace Shaw, a student at North Stanly High School and child of Suzanne Holshouser and Victor Shaw of  New London; Jacy Leigh Noble, a South Stanly High School student and

child of Gina Greene and Jacob Noble of Norwood; Merci Cheyanne Britt, a West Stanly High School student and child of Jimmy and Beth Bursell of Albemarle; Angelina Hanson Lappin, a Gray Stone Day School student and child of Rick and Cristina Lappin of New London; and Cassidy Elise Ball, a Stanly Early College High School student and child of David and Patti Ball of Albemarle.
