Led by four players in double figures, the Pfeiffer University women’s basketball team took a 72-64 USA South win over visiting Meredith College on Tuesday night at Merner Gym.

Pfeiffer was quick out of the gate, bolting to a 10-2 lead over the first 2:54 of the game and never looked back. The run was capped by a Kenadie Hudler (Jefferson, N.C.) layup.  Pfeiffer built the lead to 19-12 at the end of the quarter. Pfeiffer would then lead by 10 points on two occasions in the second quarter, with the latter coming following a Shalonda Wilkins (Chesterfield, Va.) basket at the 5:52 mark to put Pfeiffer ahead 26-16.

After leading 28-21 at halftime, the Falcons led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but Meredith closed to within three points (49-46) at the 8:25 mark of the fourth, but the Falcons would not let Meredith any closer, taking the 72-64 win.

Senior Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.) led all Pfeiffer scorers with 13 points while also notching a team-best six rebounds. Freshman Alexis Bynum (Charlotte, N.C.) had 12 points while fellow freshman Tanaeshea Ellison (Asheboro, N.C.) had 11 points. Hudler managed 10 points to cap the double-digit scorers for Pfeiffer.

Meredith’s Kate Perko had a game-high 24 points while teammates Piper Carriere and De’ja Morgan each had 13 in the loss.

The loss drops Meredith to 2-11 overall and 2-5 in USA South play while Pfeiffer improves to 6-8 and 2-4 in league play.
